Theme: What Makes a Poet?
Poetry OtherWise, after its 2007 Sabbatical, is back for its 8th summer session. This year the morning workshops will be longer, focusing as before on craft and the creative process. Many participants have said how the week has revitalized them in both life and language. In the afternoons we offer an optional group in the art of speaking poetry; or you may be glad of the free space for walks, conversation or individual writing. A question we will take up this year is 'What Makes a Poet?', and 4 o'clock will be our time to explore this through lively debate and responses to prepared contributions from our visiting poets. In the evenings: poetry readings (with music), dancing, and a bonfire to end the week
Contributing poets and artists include: Roselle Angwin, Mimi Khalvati, Andie Lewenstein, Janis Mackay, Paul Matthews, Hugo Williams .
The week is open to beginners and experienced writers alike. We actively encourage participants to share their own writing in large or small settings, including one evening to be shaped by those who attend the week. We seek to foster awareness in the art of speaking poetry. The word 'Poetry' in our title should be taken to include all uses of imaginative language.
Poetry OtherWise works within the rhythms of the Emerson College community which, with its beautiful grounds, wholesome food and dedication to the free and creative spirit of each individual, serves to carry ideals of language worked with in the classroom into ongoing relationships and communities.
